Our faculty of education has been training teachers for 50 years with over 13,500 students becoming qualified teachers through Newman University's initial teacher education courses. Academic staff will be available to discuss undergraduate and postgraduate routes into teaching, Subject Knowledge Enhancement (SKE) and Skills Test support with prospective applicants.

We offer two undergraduate routes to qualified teacher status (QTS) plus progression routes from foundation degree level:

  • primary (key stage 1 and 2) 3 and 4 year options
  • early years and key stage 1, 3 and 4 year options

We offer the following 1 year PGCEs for graduates:

  • primary - early years and key stage 1, key stage 1 and key stage 2
  • secondary –biology, chemistry, computing, English, geography, mathematics, PE, physics and RE

We also work with 12 partner teaching school alliances to provide School Direct PGCE routes to QTS at primary and secondary schools across the Midlands.

For those applicants who do not have sufficient subject knowledge prior to starting their PGCE, Newman University offers Subject Knowledge Enhancement (SKE) courses in: computing, English, geography, mathematics, biology, chemistry, physics.

Newman University offers FREE support sessions for teacher training applicants in preparing for national Skills Tests.
