Training to teach art and design
When you teach art and design, you have the opportunity to unlock a young person’s creativity and bring it to life. Great art teachers not only help to develop their cultural education, they teach important skills that can help young people shape successful, exciting careers in the UK’s growing creative industries.
What you need to know
Through teacher training, you’ll gain the skills to plan lessons that help young people become critical thinkers, developing their appreciation and understanding of all forms of art. This includes teaching pupils about the work of great artists, craft makers and designers.
Once you qualify, you’ll start on a salary of at least £24,373, or £30,480 in inner London; as your career progresses, so will your salary – teachers in leadership roles can earn on average £58,881, with many earning significantly more. Additionally, teaching offers access to a wealth of other benefits – from a generous pension to enjoying the flexibility of school holidays, up to 13 weeks, which are unique to the profession.
