Return to Teaching: caring-related career breaks

You can also view available teaching vacancies on offer via the Department for Education’s new teacher vacancy service. This service is in development and lists some teaching jobs in England. Further teaching vacancies will continue to be added, so check back regularly for new listings.
The support package
If you’re a former teacher who is looking to return from a caring-related career break, we want to support you to:
1. Ease back into it
We know that time out of the classroom can often make people apprehensive about jumping straight back into school life. This is why we are making bursaries available for acclimatisation periods before paid employment begins.
2. Work flexibly
We know that balancing ongoing caring responsibilities with work means that a flexible role is a necessity for many who might want to return. That is why we have made sure that schools who want to be involved are committed to supporting flexible working – and to working with returning teachers to understand their needs.
3. Enhance your career prospects
Many who have been out of teaching for an extended period worry that they won’t be able to develop their careers and progress into middle or senior leadership. If this is a concern for you, this package will support you to:
- build your skills and professional accreditation with funding available for national professional qualifications and continuous professional development vouchers
- develop your networks – with access to a range of valuable professional bodies
4. Get back to changing the lives of young people
Ultimately, we know that many of those on career breaks are keen to get back to working with young people – supporting them to fulfil their potential, and improving the prospects of the next generation. This package of support has been designed to overcome any barriers you may have to doing this.
The support package will be trialled throughout 2018/19 across the pilot regions. If successful, it may be rolled out more widely.
