Competitive salary and great benefits

The job satisfaction that comes with a career in teaching is hard to beat, but the rewards don’t end there. As a teacher, you’ll benefit from a competitive starting salary, excellent opportunities for pay rises, and the second largest public sector pension scheme in the country.

The average starting salary for newly qualified teachers in England is £24,200, which is higher than the overall UK average for new graduates.

Wherever you are in England, you can expect to start on a minimum of £22,023 – or £27,543 in inner London – with lots of chances to achieve increases and promotions. Schools now also have more freedom to develop their own pay policies to attract and retain the teachers that have the greatest impact on their pupils’ learning.

So what you’re paid will be linked to performance and not length of service – meaning it’s possible for you to increase your salary more quickly than ever before.

The salary ranges shown in the table below are for 2014/2015, and are revised annually.

On average, a full-time qualified teacher earns £34,600 a year

As a leading practitioner, you could earn up to £65k

If you progress to headteacher, you could earn over £100,000

Additional rewards

In addition to the basic salary you’ll earn, there are other great benefits available including:

  • holidays – you’ll get more days than many people in other professions, though teachers work for 195 days per year in school, and tend to do some work during their holidays
  • special educational needs (SEN) allowance – if you work as a qualified teacher with pupils with SEN, you could be eligible for an SEN allowance of no less than £2,043 and no more than £4,034 per annum
  • teaching and learning responsibility (TLR) payments – additional money if you take on more responsibilities

There are two main ranges for TLR payments – TLR 1 and TLR 2. If you take on sustained extra responsibilities, you could be eligible for a salary uplift within one of these ranges, depending on the category your duties come under:
